The Transformative Power of Concealer
Contrary to popular belief, concealer is not a base beauty product like foundation or tinted moisturizer. Concealer has a thicker consistency than foundation, typically used to cover smaller imperfections. The goal is to hide acne scars and brighten dark under-eye circles, but skin care professionals have taken it a step further and now offer skin barrier protection.
Types of Concealers
Concealers come in three types; liquid, stick, and cream. Like foundation, these types offer different levels of coverage. Liquid concealer is the most lightweight of all the concealer types. People with acne prone skin are more likely to use liquid because it doesn't cake or clog pores. Application is very similar to foundation.
Stick concealer offers the same benefits as liquid, but the texture is semisolid. You can apply the stick directly to your face, then use your fingers or a blending tool to blend evenly. The solid formula of stick concealer does wonders for makeup placement. However, sensitive skin or frequent breakouts are factors to consider when introducing a heavier formula.
If you struggle with large areas of facial discoloration or hyperpigmentation, cream concealer provides complete coverage. With its formula being the heaviest type, cream concealer often comes in a palette or tin. You apply it with a cosmetic tool like a brush or blender, so the intense pigment is evenly distributed. Nevertheless, liquid would still be a better fit for acne prone skin.
Color Correction
The latest and greatest advancement in the makeup world is color correcting. The essential idea is neutralizing unwanted tones in your skin using the color wheel. Complimentary colors cancel each other out, for example: red and green are on opposite sides of the color wheel, they're complimentary. If you're experiencing redness in the skin, a green concealer would cancel the redness, returning your complexion neutral. The most popular combinations are red/orange for dark/purple tones, and cool tones for sallow yellow facial tones.
There are endless uses for concealer, but its main job is covering imperfections. A quality concealer can separate a good makeup look from a great one. Whether you're an amateur or MUA in need of new tips, it's always good to know what beauty technology is out there to explore.
