Aging hits us all eventually. One day you’re living it up feeling like you have your whole future ahead of you and the next day you spot some wrinkles in the mirror and immediately launch into a midlife crisis. Okay, maybe it’s not that dramatic, but the truth is that none of us want fine lines and wrinkles that make us look older than we feel. It’s a good thing there’s a whole world of anti-aging skin care that can help.

What Causes Lines and Wrinkles?

Obviously fine lines and wrinkles come from aging, but how exactly does this work? It mostly comes down to one particular protein in your skin called collagen. Collagen is the protein that keeps your skin firm and smooth (AKA younger looking). That collagen is in a constant cycle of breaking down and being replaced. When you’re young, your body produces collagen at about the same rate that it breaks down, so your skin stays firm and smooth. But as you get older, your collagen production drops lower and lower even though your collagen is breaking down at the same rate. This leads to less collagen in your skin so your skin becomes thinner, looser, and susceptible to wrinkles.

How Do You Remove Fine Lines and Wrinkles?

There are many different approaches you can take to treating fine lines and wrinkles. The most thorough option is to have professional cosmetic treatments like laser treatments, chemical peels, or injections. The other option is to focus on skin care. You might not get the fast results you would from professional treatments but there’s still a lot you can do to de-age and revitalize your skin. There are topical products to stimulate collagen production, enhance cell turnover, and rejuvenate your skin in other ways. Look for anti-aging products or skin care products that are designed to fight lines and wrinkles.

How Do You Prevent Lines and Wrinkles?

Anti-aging skin care products can work wonderfully, but they’re more centered around modest improvements rather than a significant overhaul. That’s why it’s best to take a proactive approach and try to minimize aging as it develops. While you won’t be able to 100% prevent fine lines and wrinkles but you can hold them off surprisingly well with some healthy habits:

  • Wear sunscreen daily because sun exposure will break down your collagen more quickly
  • Use moisturizer daily to keep your skin hydrated and healthy
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet
  • Don’t smoke
  • Follow general healthy habits like exercising regularly and drinking plenty of water

When Should You Start Using Anti-Aging Skin Care?

Prevention is the name of the game, so it’s actually best to start using anti-aging skin care early in life before you see significant signs of aging. It’s typically recommended to start in your 20s, around the age of 25. With that said, it’s never too late to start refreshing your skin with anti-aging products either.

Fine lines and wrinkles are a natural part of aging to some degree but with the right skin care habits you can keep them to a minimum and enjoy a youthful look for longer.
